HAUNTING

A Pass and Play Multiplayer Game of Survival, built in GB Studio.

2-4 Players

Compatible with GB and GBC

Up to three players take on the role of children trapped in a mysterious haunted hotel, while one

Player controls the horrible monster who is hunting them! Can you and your friends avoid the monster

long enough to find the keys and escape, or will you be outsmarted by the Monster and become

their next victim?

FEATURES:

- Pass and Play Multiplayer: Up to four players can take their turn exploring (or haunting) the hotel on a single console (or PC). Gameplay proceeds in turns, with prompts for when it’s time to pass the gameboy! But no peeking - you’ll want to keep your plans secret from the monster.

- Unique Characters: Players can choose from Four unique player characters, each with different stats and starting items that may aid them in their survival, and the monster can choose from Four different monsters with unique powers and passive abilities.

- Varied Sessions: Every game has a chance to be different - the key may be hidden in different rooms, searching for loot may not give the same rewards, and the monster’s minions may spawn in different areas. You’ll have to adapt your plan each time you play!

- Tabletop Inspired Cooperative Mechanics: Each character can only move a certain number or rooms or perform a limited number of actions per turn, so you’ll need to plan your turns wisely to ensure your survival and success.

OBJECTIVE:

MONSTERS want to find and capture all VICTIMS. VICTIMS want to find the KEY and escape from the Hotel (exiting through the FOYER).

GAMEPLAY:

- In a game of HAUNTING, you play as either a MONSTER or one of the VICTIMS. All players have three stats: HP, Speed, and Actions.

- Every turn, you can change rooms equal to your SPEED.

- You can spend ACTIONS to interact with objects, other players, craft or trade items, use items or powers and more!

- If a Monster’s HP reaches 0, their turn is over, but a if a Victim’s HP is 0, they die!

- When you’re out of actions and speed, it’s time to pass the turn (from the start menu).

CONTROLS:

A: Interact   (J)

B: Cancel    (K)

START: Menu    (Enter)

SELECT: View Inventory (Victims), Review/Use Powers (Monster)     (Shift)

Hi! Would it be possible to make the ROM available for download?

It Is!

Sorry, I'm not seeing a Download button...?

Good game though, I love the concept!

This is really good! lots of great ideas and really polished. The more players, the better it is. Well done!!

How did you get the HUD to fix to the camera view??!! Is it just heaps of sprites pinned to screen in a grid?

(+1)

You would have to ask LazyDev about that. I did all the art and Lazy did all the scripting :D

Hey there!

The HUD is actually a text box, that's forced to stay on screen via some edited code in the engine. You then store a lot of the information in variables that are updated every screen, the Room Names are manually written out and a switch is used to determine which room's text box appears, and Profile Pictures are built into the ascii file itself and typed out in the text as well!

It's using modded engine files that were originally developed by some users on the discord. If you're not a member, I recommend checking it out, there's a lot of cool work being done to push GB Studio's limits!

This is *so* cool. One issue: I didn't know there was a limited number of moves and there doesn't seem to be a way to see how many moves are left

It reminds me of Resident Evil Gaiden.

Very interesting!

I was actually unfamiliar with RE Gaiden until Stranger told me about it during the collab. I think there's a LOT of potential for combat systems that build further into that space.

Once I get less busy with life stuff, we've got some cool ideas to work on!!

Wow, this is so cool!

Nice work!!

Thanks! Stranger had some awesome ideas that were a lot of fun to tackle. We had to cut a few things because of limitations and I think there's still some room to improve my scripts, but I'm really happy with how this came out!
